Stump grinding in Lake Charles, LA
Plenty of Calcasieu Parish yards still have stumps from 2020. Here's how grinding works and what to ask before the machine shows up.
A stump grinder is a machine with a carbide-toothed wheel that shaves the wood away a pass at a time until it's below ground level. What's left is a pile of chips and a shallow hole you can backfill for sod, a flower bed or a slab. Pulling the entire root ball would tear up far more of the yard, especially under a big oak.
Why are so many stumps left behind?
After big storms, crews often cut a fallen tree flush and move on, and city debris collection won't take the stump. After an April 2024 storm, the City of Lake Charles said items over 50 pounds, such as tree stumps, weren't eligible for curbside pickup. That's how a yard ends up with three or four stumps the mower has dodged for years.
What to ask before grinding
- Depth. Grass over the spot needs only a few inches; a replacement tree or a pad needs more. Say what's planned.
- Chips. Find out if they stay in the hole, get spread as mulch, or leave on the truck.
- Roots. Exposed roots snaking across the yard are often priced on their own.
- Locates. Confirm who is calling Louisiana 811 to have lines marked.
Is calling 811 really necessary for a stump?
Grinding counts as digging. La. R.S. 40:1749.13 says excavation can't start until the 811 center has had at least 48 hours' notice, with weekends and holidays left out of the count, which gives utilities time to paint and flag their lines. Old trees often sit right on top of water, gas or cable runs, and a spinning wheel will cut straight through one.
Can the machine reach my backyard?
Usually. Narrow walk-behind grinders squeeze through a standard side gate, and larger tow-behind units handle the wide oak stumps. Lake Charles gets close to 60 inches of rain a year, so after a wet spell a crew might reschedule or lay down plywood or mats to keep from leaving ruts.
Does a removal price include the stump?
Sometimes yes, often no. Read the tree removal contract for a grinding line, and ask what happens to the chips.
Pricing comes from the tree company, after someone has looked at the tree, what it could land on and how equipment can get to it. We don't quote prices, and a figure given over the phone without a visit is only a ballpark.

Common questions
Why are shoots coming up where the stump was?
Some trees resprout from live roots left underground. A deeper grind, plus clipping the shoots for a season, normally ends it.
Can a new tree go where the old stump was?
Better to shift the new one a few feet over, into native soil instead of decaying chips. If you will replant close by, ask for a deeper grind.
